Intern Orientation
Orientation takes place one week prior to starting the intern year. This includes training in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and the Pediatric Advanced Life Support course (PALS), computer systems training, and hospital orientation. Several evening events are hosted by the residency and faculty to welcome the newest intern class.
Intern Core Lecture Series
This special curriculum for new interns was designed to cover essential topics in pediatric medicine, as well as augmenting the knowledge from orientation week. From “IV Placement” to “How to teach medical students”, a wide variety of topics are covered. This series occurs four times per week during July and August during noon conference time, and offers an excellent jumpstart to intern year
Resident as an Educator
-Rainbow’s residency offers several unique features that allow each resident to develop not only as a clinician but as a clinician-educator.
• Junior Hospitalist: This service not only allows the junior residents to develop their patient management skills under direct attending supervision, but also includes protected education time each morning. This time is devoted to learning the skills of educating on the wards and at the bedside, as well as tips and tricks for the ward supervisor.
• Teaching Retreat: This summer retreat for senior residents is specifically designed to provide resources and tips for the supervising resident for advanced teaching while on a busy inpatient service, as well as skills for teaching throughout the resident’s career as a physician and effective feedback.
Intern Rounds
A discussion of the management of interesting patients currently admitted to the hospital with the interns & chief residents. Also includes time management skills, mock codes and more.

Senior Rounds
Rainbow’s “morning report”, a discussion of the management of interesting patients currently admitted to the hospital with the floor seniors, chief residents, program directors, and faculty. Also includes board review questions and senior residents presenting current literature review.
Occurs four times per week
Grand Rounds
Locally and nationally renowned physicians lecture on areas of expertise.
Occurs once per week
Candy Rounds
Consists of the chiefs and program directors bringing candy and questions or brief presentations to each area of the hospital to teach the residents informally,

Intern Retreat
A two-day retreat held outside the hospital focused on team building, communication and getting to know your colleagues. Floor coverage is provided by junior and senior residents to allow all interns to attend this retreat each fall.
PL-2 Communication Skills Workshop
Held in winter for second year residents with a focus on communication skills such as delivering bad news, communicating with ancillary team status and working with the difficult patient. Floor coverage is provided by senior residents.
Pediatric Senior Board Review
A 2 week course at the end of the PGY-3 year given by Rainbow faculty to help prepare for the licensing exam. Floor/ED coverage is provided by junior residents
NOON CONFERENCE SERIES
Occurs 5 days a week
Lunch is provided and nurses are asked to not page during conference unless there is an emergency in order to protect residents' education time. Here are some of Rainbow’s recurring noon conferences:
Patient Management Conference
This multidisciplinary case-based conference focuses on diagnostic and management issues. Here, residents present an interesting case and faculty debate complex decisions in management and follow-up.

Rainbow Rounds
This is an interactive, case-based conference focusing on history, differential diagnosis & diagnostic workup. These cases are presented by a senior resident and are moderated by the chief residents.

Evidence-Based Medicine Journal Club
Interactive conference reviewing recent publications from the pediatric literature
Focuses on the fundamentals of how to use the medical literature to answer clinical questions

RAP Clinic Conferences
Twice daily conferences facilitated by the preceptors before both morning and afternoon clinics
These cover common issues in well child care and sick visits
Critical Care Conferences
PICU and NICU rotations include specific lectures several times each week. The lectures cover core topics relevant to the care of critically ill neonates and children.
Computer Based Learning
On-line lectures are featured in our ER and resident outpatient clinic (RAP clinic) curricula
Daily online posts by chief residents include boards review questions and a summary of the literature reviewed during senior rounds
