The NICU at Rainbow is a modern 38-bed unit fully equipped to care for newborn infants with complex medical problems. The nursery is designated by the state as a Level III unit & is staffed by an array of specially trained & certified physicians, nurses, including neonatal nurse practitioners, therapists, & other consultant specialists.
The Rainbow NICU is one of twelve units in the USA designated by the NIH as a Neonatal Research Center
Infants born prematurely, together with those manifesting cardio-respiratory disorders, birth defects, inherited metabolic disorders, infections, neurologic problems, gastrointestinal & hematologic disorders, are admitted from the adjacent maternity service at University MacDonald Womens Hospital or transported in for care.
Complicated operative procedures may be accomplished in the unit, & there is a comfortable designated Family Center.
Special programs include high frequency ventilation, primary care nursing, & Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
