This research study compares lithium and valproate (Depakote) in the treatment of older adults with bipolar manic (high mood) and hypomanic episodes (slightly high mood). The study compares the side effects and effectiveness of the medications on symptoms and quality of life. Lithium and valproate are FDA approved for use in treating bipolar disorder. |
| Criteria: |
Participants must be age 60 or older, have bipolar disorder, and currently be experiencing manic (high mood) or hypomanic (mildly elevated mood) symptoms. |
