Uterine Cancer

This is the most common gynecologic cancer. A thorough, annual cancer-related checkup that includes a pelvic examination is recommended for early detection. If a woman is at high risk for uterine cancer at the onset of menopause, an endometrial tissue (the lining of the uterus) sample should be performed by her gynecologist.

Symptoms

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Postmenopausal watery discharge

Risk Factors

  • Age (postmenopausal women are at higher risk)
  • Obesity
  • Estrogen replacement therapy without supplemental progesterone
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Late menopause (after 52)
  • Never pregnant

Treatment

A total hysterectomy provides the best possible outcome for patients with uterine cancer. Depending on the stage of cancer, radiation therapy and chemotherapy may also be used.
