A Day in the Life of a Floor Intern
6:03 – Alarm goes off, snooze button is pressed, back to bed for another 5 minutes
6:08 – Alarm goes off again, time to wake up for a shower and some breakfast
6:46 – Headed on down to work
6:51 – Garage parking is sweet in the winter time – no snow shoveling!
7:00 – AM sign out, find out who got admitted last night and what happened with my own patients. No starting before 7am on the floors or the ICU!
7:10 – Time to pre-round on the patients and say “good morning” to our patient’s families
8:00 – Ready to learn: it’s time for rounds. Here we will learn about management and patient care from our terrific attendings.
11:00 – After a busy morning, the seniors are off to senior rounds (morning report) and it’s time for us to get some work done! Consults, orders, notes, oh my!
12:00 – Conference time! Here we will discuss interesting cases, disease processes, or a recent journal article. All of this is accompanied by free lunch!
1:00 – Back up to the floors for an admission or two, and checking up on the patients from the morning.
2:18 – Our senior residents have decided to do some impromptu teaching. Learning is a priority, instead of scut work.
3:36 – Candy rounds! Our chief residents have come by with a couple of pediatric questions, candy in hand for all. A nice bonus for the middle of the day!
4:10 – The end of the day nears, it’s time to get ready for sign out using our easy sign-out and note system RECS.
4:37 – Sign out is done, the on call intern has assumed care of my patients and it’s time to head home. Just another day in the life of an RB&C intern.
