Providing comprehensive care to dying patients and their families can be extremely complicated and challenging. Retrospectively identifying the unique, non-medical challenges as well as the parts of the care which were highly effective can improve the overall care provided to patients and facilitate the clinical work of staff.
In the context of retrospective case review, this curriculum focuses on the non-medical challenges faced by care providers in the care of patients at the end of life in the PICU. Open to doctors, nurses, and all clinical staff, the curriculum addresses recent cases recommended by PICU staff and has the following objectives:
Curriculum Objectives
1. Identify unique challenges precipitated by the care of patients at the end of life
2. Consider perspectives on these challenges and options to minimize them
3. Acknowledge parts of care that went well for family and staff
