What to expect when you visit Rainbow

If you are being referred or transferred to the Center for Neonatology, it is probably because your doctor has a concern about your pregnancy or the health of your unborn —or just-born — baby. You or your baby may need more intense, specialized care than your current hospital can provide.

If there is time, you and your spouse or partner will be invited on a personal tour through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where your baby will be cared for. Otherwise, we will do our best to help you get acclimated to the NICU as your baby’s care progresses.

Meeting your baby’s needs with top-notch care and facilities

Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and neighboring MacDonald Women’s Hospital have each received the highest possible designation for medical facilities by the State of Ohio. This means that both are medically staffed and equipped to handle virtually any complication that you or your baby may encounter before, during or following birth.

From taking care of mothers with high-risk pregnancies to treating at-risk newborns, our medical team is ready to serve your family.

Your baby’s birth

If necessary, your baby will be born at Rainbow or at the UHHS community hospital closest to you. Immediately after delivery, we safely transport your infant to the NICU so that you and your new baby can begin life with the best, most advanced, state-of-the-art neonatal care.

About one fourth of our babies are brought here by ambulance. Some are flown in by helicopter.

We will immediately begin to evaluate and care for your newborn, arranging for any tests or therapies needed.
