Thomas Zenty endorsed the launch of the UH Stroke System Initiative on June 25, 2008. The initiative will be coordinated by Cathy Sila MD, Director of the UHCMC Neurological Institute Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center, and includes representatives from all of the fully owned and partner UH hospitals.
The goal is to standardize the stroke chain of recovery across the UH system by implementing standardized diagnostic, treatment and educational protocols. The initiative will work closely with the UH EMS Institute and the Emergency Medicine Council. UH hospitals will participate in the American Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines Quality Improvement process and the Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center certification process.
“The UH Stroke System Initiative builds on Cleveland Operation Stroke and the long history of nationally recognized stroke care at University Hospitals,” said Anthony J Furlan MD, Co-Director of the Neurological Institute and Chairman of Cleveland Operation Stroke. “ UH has one of the strongest and most experienced stroke teams in the country.
The UH stroke system initiative will provide Cleveland and surrounding area patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke 24/7 access to the very best stroke care,” added Warren Selman MD Director of the Neurological Institute. Emergency stroke transfers and consultations can be obtained 24/7 by calling 216 844 1111.
