Giving to Rainbow

120 Anniversary
120 years of rainbow babies & children’s hospital One hundred & twenty years ago, a group of women known as the Rainbow Circle of the King’s Daughters met on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1887, to discuss how to give back to Cleveland’s children in need.

That generous spirit from over a century ago lives on today in the life-saving work of physicians, nurses and child life advocates who make Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital a world class health care destination for babies, children and their families.

What started as a simple idea of caring for children has grown in prominence and recognition. Rainbow is once again ranked #1 in the Midwest among children’s hospitals and #5 in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report. The legacy lives on from that first Thanksgiving meeting and will continue with the generosity of many who support Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

To honor the occasion, two long-time physicians, Samuel Horwitz, M.D. and Carl Doerschuk, M.D., teamed up with a former UH archivist, Nancy Erdey, Ph.D., to publish a 260-page history book, For the Children , sharing the deep-rooted heritage of the hospital.
