In this section, you will find information on the Core Pediatric Clerkship at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. This clerkship addresses issues specific to the health of children and adolescents. At the core of these issues is human developmental biology, encompassing physical, emotional, and cognitive growth and development from birth through adolescence. This process is affected not only by illness but also by environmental factors at familial, community and societal levels. This clerkship focuses on the diagnosis, management and prevention of acute and chronic pediatric illnesses. Patterns of normal growth and development and the ability to recognize and evaluate abnormal development are stressed.
Although students will be exposed to a wide variety of patients and specialty services, the emphasis of this clerkship is on general pediatric principals which are important to all medical students. At the completion of this clerkship, all students should have a solid basic knowledge of general pediatric health care, and interested students should have a foundation upon which to base further studies.
The clerkship runs for 8 weeks: Students spend 4 weeks on an inpatient serve at RB&C; 2 weeks in an outpatient general pediatric clinic, one week in the newborn nursery at MacDonald Hospital; and one week on an elective experience in a field of the student’s choice. A questionnaire soliciting student preferences regarding assignments is distributed approximately one month prior to the start of the clerkship. Individual schedules are distributed during orientation on the first day of the clerkship.
The clerkship is administered by Dr. Michael Dell and Ms. Marilyn Taylor, who are available for questions or concerns:
